10 biggest World Championship Upsets

10. Diesel vs Bob Backlund
This one actually came out of nowhere. Bob had beaten Bret for the title only a couple of days earlier at Survivor Series and then wham bam thank you ma'am he's not the champ anymore. I don't think anybody saw this coming, hell Diesel was one half of the Tag Team champions the last time I'd seen him on TV. Next thing you know Vince starts off the next TV show saying we have a new champion in Diesel. All I could think is what happened to Backlund

9. Tommy Rich vs Harley Race
Even though Rich's title reign only lasted 4 days he can always say he was champion. At the time I don't think anyone looked at Rich as a top tier guy, and according to Harley Race the title switch was due to a power struggle backstage in Georgia Championship Wrestling. It seems Jim Barnett made the switch to boost fan interest and attendance. It did, and left Barnett in control of GCW

8. Eddie Guerrero vs Brock Lesnar
At this point in his career Eddie was an extremely talented mid carder, and it appeared that he always would be. Then fate stepped in in the form of the Minnesota Vikings. Brock had decided he wanted to be a football player, leaving a huge gap in an already depleted Smackdown roster. Up steps Eddie to the Main Event scene, Where he would go on to win the world title at No Way Out '04 and become one of the most beloved champions in the history of WWE

7. The Iron Sheik vs Bob Backlund
Backlund had been champion for almost 4 years at this point. Interestingly enough this never had to happen, as Vince asked Bob to turn Heel and then Drop the title to Hogan. Backlund refused and so we got one of the biggest upsets ever as the recently returning Iron Shiek would go on to beat Backlund when his manager Arnold Skaaland threw in the towel.

6. Chris Jericho vs The Rock - Chris Jericho vs Stone Cold Steve Austin
Heading into this event if you asked 100 people who would leave WWE Vengeance Undisputed champion of the world, I don't think 1 would of said Jericho. That's no slight on Jericho but we are talking about crowning the first ever Undisputed World Champion in the History of the business, and the other combatants names were Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. This was also Jericho's first world title win as well, so for anybody to say this wasn't an upset is absurd.

5. Ric Flair vs Kerry Von Erich
Kerry's world title win may not have been an upset these days, considering it was the David Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions, But Kerry's win was probably the biggest moment in the history of wrestling in Texas. Sadly Kerry was unreliable due to his substance abuse problems and dropped the title back 18 days later.

This is all I could find match starts at 2:25

4. Mankind vs The Rock
Mankind at this point is his career was already a hardcore legend and a one eared freak, and was fast becoming one of the most popular wrestlers in the business, but he was not a world champion. The story of this night unfolds rather peculiar. If you were watching Nitro that night you would of heard Bischoff giving out the results of Raw. Now he did this nearly every week so I didn't pay much attention but the last result he gave caught my ear and a ton of others as well. You see Bischoff let slip that Mankind was gonna win his first World Tilte almost in unison millions of TV sets switched to Raw to see Mankind upset the Rock. That was the begining of the end of WCW.
Match starts at 6:34

3. Ron Simmons vs Big Van Vader
8/2/92 - Announcer surprise level
This match wasn't even supposed to happen, as far as fans knew. It was supposed to be Sting vs Vader, but Sting got Kayfabe taken out by Jake the Snake Roberts. So as a result Ron wins a Raffle and becomes number one contender and World Champion in one night. Ron Simmons had become the first ever black World Champion. The fact is he fell into the title because they wanted to start a mega feud between Jake the Snake and Sting. Still Ron stepped up and was one of the most popular champions of that era in WCW

2. Brunno Sammartino vs Ivan Koloff
Brunno had held the title since 10/4/63 and never lost at MSG.
"On January 18, 1971, Sammartino lost the championship at Madison Square Garden to Ivan Koloff. The crowd was so stunned into silence that Sammartino thought his hearing had been damaged. After the pin, Koloff slowly walked across the ring while the ref raised his hand three times. The announcer came into the ring with the belt but, fearful of a riot, did not present it to Koloff. Koloff left the ring while Sammartino stayed inside to keep the crowd's attention off Koloff. As Sammartino left the ring, people started crying." - Wikipedia

1. Macho Man Randy Savage Wins Wrestlemania IV tournament to become World Champion
Wow how do you top that last one, I guess you start by winning a 14 man tournament that includes Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant and then you go on to win four matches in one night to become the new World Wrestling Federation Champion. The Macho Man did it against all odds with a little help from his friends along the way. They should make that into a movie maybe there stocks would go up next quarter.
